It was a rainy day…until it wasn’t.
Most of us woke up to a torrential downpour with thunder and lightening thrown in for good measure on Saturday, September 21st…the last full day of summer for 2014. By noon, the heavens had cleared, the sun was shining and the temperature was rising. The day turned into one of this summer’s best days. In fact, it was a perfect day to head to Port Perry for the 6th Annual Harvest Chili Cook-Off.
The drive to Port Perry through the Durham Region, from any direction, provides a spectacular visual experience no matter what time of year it is. This particular day, as we prepared to say good-by to our somewhat brief summer, we were not disappointed. The trees have already begun their fall show, displaying vibrant reds, bright yellows and fiery oranges.
When you arrive at the cook-off the first thing you do is visit the Port Perry Business Improvement Association booth to pick up your bright orange bag. Inside this bag you will find everything you need to have taste bud bliss. You get a handy mug to put the chili in, a spoon, a voter card and a bottle of water to clear the palette.
Tummies fill up fast! There are food trucks to supply alternative choices if chili is not for you. In fact there is something for everyone at this event. We asked Kenna Kozak, Executive Director/General Manager of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce | Port Perry Business Improvement Association to sum up the day for us.
“After the rain & wind departed from Downtown Port Perry, the skies opened up to a wonderful sunny day for the 6th Annual Harvest Chili Cook-Off! Event participants were treated to a variety of Farmer’s markets, Art & Kid zones to enjoy! The band Fiddlestix headlined on Queen Street to keep everyone’s toes tapping and dancing. Ten (10) Chili Competitors went head to head in a friendly – “heated” – chili Cook-off for the Best Chili in Port Perry. The Judges’ Choice this year went to the Old Flame Brewing Co. and the People’s Choice award went to Herrington’s Quality Butchers for a second straight year, just beating out Marwan’s Global Bistro! A grand day out in Port!“
We couldn’t agree with Kenna more. It was a wonderful day and one we highly recommend you attend next year. Until then we will leave you with some photos of the day.
