Destination Durham Region

Festival season is in full swing and not even an over abundance of rain can stop it in the Durham Region. You will find at least one festival, usually more, somewhere in the Durham Region every weekend right through until Labour Day. Durham Region has already had the first Ribfest in the area, in Pickering, Food Truck Frenzy in Whitby and the Spring Fair in Brooklin. We started the season with the Artfest in Pickering.

Actually the day included three great events: Discover Your city, which gave you the opportunity to meet city staff and learn more about how your municipal government works; How-To in 10 Festival, where there were 32 booths to learn how to do stuff in 10 minutes; and then of course, Artfest. This year the City of Pickering added a Youth Arts Showcase to the event which featured Pickering Youth ages 12-25 demonstrating the theme “I am Ontario”.

There were hands on activities,

live on stage entertainment, food trucks, the Doodle Trailer,

and artistic creations beyond your imagination.

With over 100 booths to choose from, the Esplanade was alive with creativity. Whether you wanted to browse, buy or learn, the choices seemed endless.  There was a fantastic variety of original art which included Paintings (Oil, Acrylic, Water Colour), Photography, Pottery, Wood Carvings, Jewellery, Hand Made Rugs, Stationary, Candles and more!

Alex Lazich was on hand to create a patriotic spray paint masterpiece right in front of our eyes that is destined to rest in the Youth Art Centre.

The Brooklin Wood Carvers demonstrated their work while encouraging onlookers to join their ranks.

It was a wonderful day celebrating all that is creative. The crowds couldn’t have been more impressed, many leaving with unique treasures. Some are already talking about their next festival destination in the Durham Region.

2016 • Rose Quartz, Serenity and Monkeys

2015 has come and gone and in its place comes a whole new year of possibilities. Things will most certainly look different. Are you ready to make some changes?

According to the Chinese calendar the new year begins February 8th and it will be the year of the Red Monkey. The monkey is quite clever and intelligent, especially in their career and wealth. They are also a naughty, wily and vigilant animal so be prepared to be kept on your toes.

Pantone has already surprised us this year by choosing two colours to represent the colour of the year.

“For the first time Pantone introduces two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity as the PANTONE Color of the Year 2016. Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer and embracing warm tone and cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

Our Stacee-Free Team enjoys starting fresh in a new year by setting themselves some goals. They aren’t all the same. In fact most of them are quite different.  Let’s hear what they have planned for 2016.

Stacee-Free Team Leader, Judy Stacee-Cleaver, has set a few goals for the year. Balance between her personal and professional life seems to be the focus.

“It was very busy last year, with major changes everywhere. In 2016 I would like to have a little more time to: have fun; get some exercise; complete important projects that have been sitting on the back burner; connect with more of my clients who have become friends; complete our new web site; grow our Networking group who has supported us all these years; and join our local Board of Trade.”

Kathy Lapointe has a solid plan to increase her Real Estate skills.

“I plan on attending more Real Estate seminars, courses and conferences to network. I would like to treat myself with a new Dell Tablet to update my efficiency dealing with Sellers and Buyers, and I’m looking forward to another successful year with Mincom New Choice Realty.”

Mincom Jo has done some reflecting and has big plans if she gets lucky.

“The years are going by quickly, but the last one was especially fast.  I’m always striving to be kinder to myself and others, especially on the roads. To send out thoughts of Peace for the World and given the past year, we need more people to think on Peace. I would love to win 5 million dollars, take some friends on a cruise and book suites with balconies, then give most of the money away. On the professional side, I plan on completing the Broker course this year. ”

John Martin has a plan for 2016 and has set some very specific goals.

“Some of my goals are as follows:

  1. Grow my Real Estate Business by at least 100% by doing these: advertise in my farm area at least once a month • attend the free “Lunch and Learns” at the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade and at least six “Networking After 5” events at the APBOT • polish my listing presentation skills • try to be a better listener • collect email addresses and include them in a monthly news letter • take more real estate courses
  2.  Get more active, do more cycling, swimming and walking. More activity with the wife would also be good
  3. Start renovating the house
  4. Get the dog well-trained.
These are just some of the things I’ve been thinking about. The phrase “Planning for Success” is better than doing nothing and planning to fail.”

“I’m looking forward to helping my clients achieve their Real Estate goals for 2016. I hope to grow spiritually, continue being involved with my community and look forward to spending quality time with my family at home and abroad.”

A Run To Remember

It was a bit like herding cats. The weather was perfect, but when you get that many people together ready to run or walk for a mutual cause, the mood can be a bit boisterous. Admittedly, it took a couple of tries, but eventually, a wonderful group shot of The 7th Annual Run To Remember Jeff Warne was captured.

IMG_2424

The Run To Remember is held every year to honour the life of Jeff Warne and to support the Bereaved Families of OntarioDurham Region.  The Team Jeff website tells us…

“On January 26, 2008, Jeff was suddenly taken from us in a violent act. This was more than the loss of a young life; it was the loss of a son, a brother and a truly loved friend.

Words cannot describe the loss and heartache his family and friends continue to endure.

When a child dies, grief can devastate a family. Bereaved Families is a non-profit organization in Ontario whose primary mandate is to provide support services to families who have lost children.”

BFO – Durham has been supporting families in the Durham Region for almost 20 years and continues to assist Jeff’s family with compassion and support.

Jeff’s family — his mom Denise, his dad Phil, sister Michelle and aunt Caroline set the tone for the day with smiles, hugs, laughs, and some of the mischievousness that was present. There was even a questionable wig or two amongst them.

The perfect place to start the race was at Jeff’s commemorative bench at Cliffview Park in Pickering.

Mincom Jo WalkingWhether you ran or walked the three kilometers, it was hard not to enjoy the camaraderie, not to mention the breathtaking views of the area.

The run has evolved over the past seven years. The first annual run was part of the Ottawa marathon. The next three years were part of the Whitby Marathon and 2015 is the third year it has been a stand-alone event in Pickering. Now, when the race is complete and the winners in each category are announced, everyone is treated to a wonderful lunch and live music from DoveStar (Sue Blair, Art Bronkhorst and Alfie, Drew and Mike.

As a special treat for our weary runners and walkers, there were even two massage stations starring Massage Therapists Ashley Ne Ville and our very own Mincom Jo.
MassageFor Judy Stacee-Cleaver, it was a perfect fit for Mincom New Choice Realty Ltd. Brokerage to participate as a sponsor. Judy lost her son Jonathan to cancer 10 years ago. She knows how important an organization like Bereaved Families of Ontario can be, helping a family through such a loss.

According to Jeff’s aunt Caroline, over $9000 was raised this year. She told us:
“Over the past seven years we have raised approx $75,000 for BFO.  We are pretty proud of this, considering the organizing of this event is done by a very small group of people and 99% of the participants are our friends and colleagues.”
Yes, May 24th, 2015 was a perfect day. The perfect day to remember and honour a young man missed by many.

It’s A New Year

2015

It’s a bright, shiny, brand new year. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? Our Stacee-Free Team has. Well, not necessarily resolutions, but most definitely they have set themselves goals for 2015. We’ll just let them tell you about it themselves.

Judy Stacee-Cleaver

Stacee-Free Team Leader,  Judy Stacee-Cleaver, has set a few goals for the year. Most are professional but a couple are personal goals.

” I’m aiming at getting twice as many listings and twice as many sales as I had in 2014. We had a pretty good year so it won’t be easy, but I’m up to the challenge.  Right now I’m working on a Team Handbook for Success and I intend to complete it as soon as possible. I’m looking forward to trying out some new ideas this year and really honing my skills with regard to Social Media. It plays such a big part in what we do that if you don’t keep up you’ll be left behind. We are always looking for new representatives to bring something fresh to the Team so I’m looking to do some hiring.
On a personal note, I’m selling my home on Lake Scugog and moving to our new home on 10 acres in Clarington.”

Don Carter’s goals for 2015 include education, referrals and networking.

“There are some mandatory courses for the upcoming two year term that I want to complete but I would also like to earn the Senior Real Estate Specialist designation (SRES). I already have the Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) designation so this is a natural next step. Plus, I’m planning to step up my game with networking and seeking referrals by getting involved with the local Board of Trade and Architectural Council.”

“My goal is to consistently complete two deals or more a month. This year I am also going to focus on feeling better and healthier. On a personal note my plan is to actually get away this summer to somewhere tropical for a couple of weeks of R & R with my whole family.”

Mincom Jo has set herself some pretty lofty goals for 2015.

“This year I’ll be getting my Broker’s License. I’ve been planning it for some time…and now is the time. We have a great Team and I would like to work with them more, to help them increase their potential both personally and in business. There is always room for self-improvement and I’m working on being kinder — having more compassion and understanding of people and situations. I’m also planning to meditate more and to continue working out at the gym.”

John Martin didn’t make a New Year’s resolution but he has a plan for 2015 and is putting things in place this year that he has not done since joining the Stacee-Free Team.

“I’m determined to make 2015 my best year yet in Real Estate. I am trying to be a lot more focused. Getting out of bed earlier and getting more things done each day has just been the start. This year, I actually have a plan for success that I am determined to follow and so far I’m right on track.

I also want to do a lot more cycling with my wife Melanie this year. I’m also hoping to go to the Calgary Stampede. I want to sell our park model summer trailer this year. We have outgrown the trailer park scene and it’s time to move on.
2015 is going to be a big year for changes. Our son has purchased a home in Bowmanville and hopefully he’ll get possession in late April and I will get my garage back! Our house needs some interior updating and the landscaping needs to be looked at. Yes, there are lots of  things to be done at home. All in all, this year is going to be a good one because I’m going to make it a good one!”

Make a difference

As you can see, the Stacee-Free Team has big plans for this year. They’ve already started reaching their goals and will continue to strive to complete everything they have set out to do. We hope that you are able to realize your goals and dreams this year too!HPPY NEWYEAR

The Wearin’ Of The Green

It is said that March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, is the one day a year when everyone is Irish. Celebrations can be found far and wide with everyone participating in the wearin’ of the green, adorned by four leaf clovers and drinking green beer.

The office of the Stacee-Free Team isn’t any different. They like to celebrate. In fact this year they started a little early. Let’s call it a warm up to St. Patrick’s Day. On February 25th some team members found themselves at the Ed Mirvish Theatre enjoying the Irish dancers in “Heartbeat of Home”.

Getting into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day

Our very own Irish lass, Anna Stinson, who hails from the Emerald Isle gives us the occasional reality check when it comes to our celebrations. She also treats us to some lovely homemade Irish shortbread that will melt in your mouth.

“There is a lot of folklore surrounding St. Patrick’s Day. You will hear about snakes, green beer and leprechauns. I wouldn’t say there were no snakes. There may have been a few snakes but St. Patrick is credited with introducing Christianity to Ireland.  No self-respecting Irish person would ever drink green beer and as far as the wee folk go, well…I think I will let you decide as I wouldn’t want to interfere with anyone’s dream of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”

It has become an office tradition to have lunch at one of the Irish Pubs in the Durham Region. There are lots to choose from but The Irish Times in Pickering has been the St. Patrick’s Day destination the past few years. What will our Anna order from the Irish fare available?

“I will order pasties which are minced beef & potatoes made into a ‘pattie’ and champ which is mashed potatoes and green onions or I might have shepherds pie or steak and kidney pie.”

Irish Times

As for the wearin’ of the green, a simple Shamrock will do. Some will go all out wearing green from head to toe. There are plenty of places in the area to find something to green yourself up. Even the local Walmart has a pretty impressive supply.

Whether you are Irish or just Irish for the day, have some fun. We shall leave you with a wee Irish blessing…

“May the luck of the Irish be always at hand,

And good friends always near you.

May each and every coming day

Bring some special joy to cheer you.”
