If you had been in Bowmanville the night of September 18th you may have thought the town had gone to the dogs. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, Bowmanville has recently announced that it has been selected as the next Million Dollar Neighborhood.
There was indeed an abundance of canines hanging around in the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot, but they were there to entertain. Super Dog Central, Canada’s most dynamic facility dedicated to dogs brought along some of their most talented four legged friends to show off their tricks and participate in the 9th Annual Clarington “Take Back The Night” Walk For A Safer Community.
“Take Back The Night is an international event with marches and rallies occurring around the world since 1976. Historically, these events focused on violence against women, with the marches often being “women-only” — a walk through darkness symbolizing that women, united, can overcome the fear and violence.”
Hosted by Bethesda House, the Clarington march has taken this further making it a walk in support of a safer community for everyone — men, women, youth & children! People come together as a family united when it comes to this neighbourhood and all were eager to take to the streets to prove it. Men, women, couples, kids, families and pets: there were few who were not represented. Among the many were the Mayor, participants from the Fire and Police Departments, the Lions Club and even members of the Stacee-Free Team were on hand to walk.
This sense of caring and community played a big part in Bowmanville being chosen to participate in the television show Million Dollar Neighborhood. The cameras were prevalent this night and everyone involved with the walk knew why they were there.
“In the series, 100 families have only 10 weeks to raise their collective net worth by $1 million. In each episode, neighbours take on a community challenge and an individual challenge. They will need to dig deep, downsize, earn, barter, share, swap, scrimp, save and collaborate with their neighbours in ways they never could have imagined. And, if all one hundred families in this community can do it, they will truly become a Million Dollar Neighbourhood. To raise the stakes even higher, if the community makes their $1 million goal, they’ll choose one family to win the life-changing sum of $100,000. “
If the Take Back the Night walk is any indication, Bowmanville will prove to be up to the task. Look for the new season of the show, featuring Bowmanville, to start airing in January 2013.
